Publish your marine data (get a DOI)

SeaDataNet uses the SEANOE (SEA scieNtific Open data Edition) service to facilitate scientists to publish their research data in the field of marine sciences as citable resources.

Each data set published by SEANOE has a DOI. Your data may well be cited in scientific articles in a reliable and sustainable way.

SEANOE offers a fast responding service : if your dataset is well described¹, you should get a DOI within 24 hours.

Data are necessarily published in free access in SEANOE. However you fix by yourself the conditions of use of your data by selecting one of the seven Creative Commons licenses. Note that it is possible to inactivate access to data files for a maximum period of two years, for example to restrict access to data of a publication under scientific review. During the embargo period, the DOI is active and the description page of data (the DOI Landing page) is available freely online.

For your data files, choose perennial and non-owner formats (eg CSV vs Excel). SEANOE can recommend and help you in the choice of your data file formats.

Note that a data deposit is definitive. Data published in SEANOE cannot be deleted once published. In case of errors in your data, you can update them however.

Each data set is checked before being published. SEANOE is entitled to refuse a publication if the deposit does not match with its quality criteria or its theme (marine sciences).

Data published in SEANOE are also automatically duplicated to the EMODnet Data Ingestion portal so that marine data centers of the EMODnet Ingestion network will be informed about the existence and the availability of datasets published in SEANOE. Those data centers will then undertake activities for elaborating submitted datasets for uptake in their national databases and wider publishing in European data portals such as SeaDataNet, EurOBIS, and EMODnet thematic portals, if the datasets are of interest for their portfolio.

Once published, SEANOE will survey the dataset citation in articles and will register these citations in the dataset record. Download statistics are reported to authors once a year.

¹ when you submit a dataset in SEANOE, please describe it so it can be easily re-used by anyone. For example, if you publish your data in a CSV file, do not forget to add a header with intuitive parameters names and units.
