EDMED
The European Directory of Marine Environmental Data (EDMED) is a comprehensive reference to the marine data sets and collections held within European research laboratories, so as to provide marine scientists, engineers and policy makers with a simple mechanism for their identification. It covers a wide range of disciplines including marine meteorology; physical, chemical and biological oceanography; sedimentology; marine biology and fisheries; environmental quality; coastal and estuarine studies; marine geology and geophysics; etc. Data sets are described in EDMED irrespective of their format (e.g. digital databases or files, analogue records, paper charts, hard-copy tabulations, photographs and videos, geological samples, biological specimens etc).
SeaDataNet EDMED XML format
For EDMED a metadata format has been defined, based upon the ISO 19115 content model (where applicable). The EDMED Schema and XML coding are supported by URLs and URNs to the SeaDataNet Common Vocabularies. As part of the 1st Innovation Cycle of the SeaDataNet II project a migration has taken place in November 2013 of the Vocabularies to the upgraded version NVS 2.0. and the use of C16 for sea regions has been replaced by C19.

XML metadata files for the SeaDataNet directories EDMED, CSR, EDMERP, CDI and EDIOS can be prepared by using the MIKADO software tool.
The MIKADO software (V3.0 and higher) is supporting NVS 2.0 and the upgraded schemas for each of the SeaDataNet directories.
The maintenance of the EDMED directory is coordinated at a national level by the National Oceanographic Data Centre / Marine Data Centre, belonging to the SeaDataNet partnership.
